Students Of Rall ‘Journey Into American Indian Territory’

The unique and interactive presentation enabled students to learn about the daily life of Native Americans.

From Lindenhurst Schools: Fifth-grade students at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District explored the culture of the Plains Indians with the assistance of the “Journeys into American Indian Territory” program.

The unique and interactive presentation enabled students to learn about the daily life of Native Americans through hands-on activities, games and a museum of authentic artifacts and artwork. Guest presenters Monica Colberg and Chuck Gosline along with program director Bob Vetter constructed a teepee for the students, shared traditional storiesn and songs. They also played Native American games such as Shinny and hoop and stick, which taught skills, respect and teamwork, and important principals in the Native American culture.

“Just like in modern day school, there were always goals beneath the fun,” said Colberg. “The games improved their fine and gross motor skills and prepared them their life and their survival.”
