NORTH AMITYVILLE, NY - Construction on the new Town of Babylon animal shelter is nearly complete, according to town officials.
While an exact opening date for the new facility has not yet be announced, last week Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez took a tour of the future animal shelter led by Director Chris Elton in North Amityville to see how construction is coming along.
The new facility will be a state-of-the-art temporary home for animals in the town available for adoption, featuring an on-site veterinarian office and classroom.

"This new facility is long overdue for the town, and I know that Chris Elton and his dedicated staff will make the most of the new features of the building," Schaffer said. "Our animals will be more adoptable and children in our community will have the chance to come in and learn about the importance of caring for them."
The facility will feature several improvements from the shelter’s current location.

Cats will have the option to stay indoors or go to an enclosed outdoor cat porch throughout the day.
Areas designated for dogs are designed to keep them calm to increase their chances of adoption, as well as their safety and the safety of volunteers.
There are also mirrored windows so that the dogs cannot see people walking past or looking into their room.
The dog runs outside have four-foot-high pieces of PVC to allow the dogs to focus on exercise and other playtime activities and not be distracted by the other dogs and people.
The new building will also feature wash and drainage systems throughout the building.
Finally, there will be an on-site classroom that will used for partnerships with local school districts and community groups.
