As last night’s Board of Education meeting was rushing towards the 11th hour the trustees descended into chaos. Each calling for cuts of programs such as MS sports, elementary clubs, MS summer school, etc. with no consensus being reached or rationale being given for such cuts. And then out of the blue they called for the reinstatement of a Director of Guidance; effectively wiping out all of the savings achieved with the prior cuts. Chaos reigned.
Despite the Board’s self-imposed deadline of April 8 to adopt a budget, the public left not knowing what that budget will be or what cuts will be made. The Board also revealed that they will also be voting on April 8 on a plan to rebuild the administration building despite no public hearing taking place prior to that vote.
This is not what transparency looks like. This is not what democracy looks like. This board has betrayed the public trust and must be held accountable in future elections. During the painful final seconds of this free for all Board President Patrick Gallagher announced that he will not be seeking re-election in May.
I urge you to attend next Tuesday’s meeting:
Board of Education Budget Adoption and Administration Building vote
Tuesday, April 8
7:30PM
Location to be determined
