Couple Indicted For Stealing Mail On Christmas Day: Nassau DA

Prosecutors say the couple from the Bronx was fishing mail out of a mailbox when they were caught.

A couple from the Bronx were indicted on Jan. 23 on charges related to their arrest on Christmas Day for trying to steal mail from a mailbox, the Nassau County District Attorney said.

Yoli Gomez Osoria, 27, and Andrea Rose Gomez, 28, were both charged with 36 counts of first-degree possession of a forged instrument, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, nine counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar's tools and attempted petty larceny.

The two were released on their own recognizance and are due back in court on Feb. 14. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison.

“These defendants allegedly tried to swipe outgoing mail on Christmas morning by dangling a glue-coated bottle in a mailbox,” said District Attorney Madeline Singas. “Quick action by an NCPD officer caught these alleged thieves in the act, and our prosecutors will hold them accountable.”

According to Singas, a Nassau County Police Officer was on a routine patrol in Atlantic Beach on Dec. 25 when they saw Osoria standing in front of the mailboxes outside the Atlantic Beach Post Office, with both of his hands on one of the boxes. When Osoria saw the officer, Singas said he fled and threw a plastic bottle over a fence.

Police later recovered the bottle and found it was filled with an unknown liquid and coating on the outside with a sticky substance. It had a white string attached to the top.

After a chase, Singas said that Osoria was apprehended by the officer near his car. His wife, Gomez, was sitting in the car with the passenger door open. Singas said that the officers found a loose panel in the center console, which held a brown paper bag containing 35 $100 bills, one $50 bill and a $100 check. The check was not made out to either Osoria or Gomez, Singas said, and the bills were later determined to be forgeries.

The couple was placed under arrest. Singas said that, during a check of Osoria's possessions, police found another check which was not made out to either of them.

Singas said that police also found seven sealed envelopes in Gomez's purse, which were covered with the same sticky substance that was on the bottle. Singas said the envelopes were stolen. One of the envelopes contained a $2,800 check. Police also found a glue mouse trap in the car, Singas said, which was the same as what was on the bottle.

Singas said that five people were victimized by the couple.
