Grinding Sands Release the Core

There are so many stories on our beach and boards, some sad, some beautiful—some both.

Many of you recognize some of the people I feature in my photo essays, you see them as you bike the boards or stroll our shore. Some may even be your neighbors. But you often don’t know the story behind them, and we all have our stories.

I spoke with many I’ve come upon who have told me about their past, their pain, their joys. Sometimes their joys were the result of their pain.

We all suffer loss at one time or another. Some of us become immobilized by it, others need to move, to act, to make a difference, big or small. No good difference is too small. The important thing to them is to move.

I think being immobilized only deepens the pain. The best method of dealing with loss is to move, be involved, reach out to others, not for sympathy but to offer help. And in helping others we might help ourselves.

Even small gestures of kindness, brightening someones day, creating a smile makes a difference—in them and us.
