The Heart of the Arts is a series of articles offering an intimate glimpse at our talented Arts In The Plaza artists.

Paintings In Detail…by Frank Cerrone

Frank Cerrone paints with distinct detail without brushes. Each of his works are painted by toothpicks. The first time I saw his work, I was amazed by the amount of patience he must have to create such meticulous art. Each design was their own separate creation, and I’ve been wanting to know the root of it all. Frank was at first an art major, but ventured off to other careers. But,he ended up right back at his passion—creating art.

He started making toothpick art when he got his hands on some small pieces of plaque from a store that was going out of business. He experimented on them and realized that this method worked for him. He used toothpicks to paint on these small plaques, and it grew to the collection of painted works that he has now.

His work has shifted significantly since his first show ten years ago at Point Lookout. He has been constantly experimenting with different mediums. Originally, he focused on plaques and big pieces. He has since added jewelry hangers, key-holders, and jewelry to the mix. His favorite pieces to make are the paintings of Tuscany and Venice because they remind him of his trips to Europe. Italy is one of his favorite places, so these pieces are near and dear to him. Besides his love for Italy and painting, Frank gardens and owns parrots.
