The Hearts Of The Arts: Past Objects Art by Dolhathai Srijamcharoen

While Dolhathai might appear to be soft-spoken, her art work speaks multitudes of her bold and mighty self within. Her jewelry and art are absolutely stunning and original, they resemble their creator effortlessly. She projects a warm, loving, and tender spirit that is contagious to each person that enters her tent. Dolhathai has a rich story behind her and I had the privilege of uncovering it.

Dolhathai has been an artist her whole life. She was supposed to be an artisan, but she loved to travel. She was a journalist when she lived in Thailand and having that experience propelled her to want to travel farther. This being said, she relocated to New York City in 2001 to work as an artist and jewelry designer. In 2008, she was part of a group of bottle collectors and historians and she would go on digs for old glass around New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Her first art show where she displayed her art and jewelry was in 2008 in New York.

Her work is inspired by her love for creating a story. She met and became friends with a man in Union Square who sold bottles, and she joined the group he was a part of right after. She finds her pieces on these digs, and the ones she finds to be the most beautiful, she uses to create her art. By making these pieces, she is able to ring back to her time as a writer in Thailand. These pieces she finds symbolize the rich history and life within them, and it is like rewriting their story by creating art with them. She feels as though being able to show these found objects in a new form is a privilege all in itself.

Dolhathai continues to make her jewelry and art because when she is presented with an opportunity, she runs with it. By going on digs to selling her jewelry at various art shows—she is able to meet a diverse set of people. She loves history, and to her, meeting people through her art is similar to discovering pieces from a dig. They both uncover something about the world around you that you didn’t quite know before.

Overtime, her work has transitioned with the type of clientele that she attracts. Whichever pieces she sees her customers most drawn too, she will adapt into different designs. Her favorite pieces to make are ones from her found objects, but those that she is able to play around with color more often. For example, she loves when she is able to mix rich blues with different metal tones.
