Hempstead Town To Unveil New 9/11 Memorial At Ceremony
The memorial will honor all those who perished on 9/11, and those who have died since from illness.

The Town of Hempstead will unveil its new, permanent memorial to those who died on Sept. 11 at its memorial ceremony in Point Lookout this year.
The town's new memorial park will honor all of those who died on 9/11, not just those from the town. Located at the Town Park in Point Lookout, the waterfront memorial will be open year-round for reflection.
The memorial features a meditation plaza with a granite memorial table, on which is etched the poem "On the Beach at Night" by Walt Whitman. An elevated walk rises above the plaza, and the names of all the victims will be carved into granite on the edifice of a pedestrian bridge.

According to Newsday, the names include all those who died on 9/11 as well as those who have died since from related illnesses. The town will update the names yearly.
The centerpiece of the memorial is a 30-foot-long steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center, which stands at the center of the space. Along with the beam, a plaque tells those at the memorial how far they are from where the Twin Towers once stood.
