LBHS, Town Team Up For New Recycling Initiative

Special Education students will collect recyclables and donate proceeds to Camp ANCHOR.

Long Beach High School's Special Education Life Skills Program is teaming up with the Town of Hempstead in a special initiative to raise money for Camp ANCHOR.

The town has provided the school with 100 recycling bins to help collect bottles and cans. The school plans to donate the proceeds from the recyclables to Camp ANCHOR, the town's camp for children with special needs.

“The Town of Hempstead is proud to partner with Long Beach High School to implement this great recycling program, which will help keep our beautiful seaside communities clean, and also provide resources to programs helping people with special needs,” said Town Supervisor Anthony Santino. “We are confident that the students of the Life Skills Program will do an excellent job on this project.”

The Life Skills students will distribute the recycle bins into classrooms. This new Redeemable Recycling Initiative is an expansion of the Long Beach School District’s ongoing efforts to teach students the importance of protecting the local environment, particularly when it comes to keeping waste out of the waterways.

“We are excited to add this new feature to the district-wide recycling program, and we are grateful to the Town of Hempstead for supporting us through the donation of the bins,” Long Beach Superintendent David Weiss said. “This initiative is aligned with the Long Beach Public Schools’ mission to help students develop as global citizens who give back to their community.”

The Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center at Camp ANCHOR serves 1,200 children and adults with special needs, providing programs and activities for all. Camp ANCHOR recently announced a partnership with the Peninsula Kiwanis Club to create a community service organization for people with special needs. As part of this group, participants fundraise, plant trees, head up recycling projects, landscape community grounds and much more.
