LI Sanitation Employee Stabbed Coworker With Hunting Knife: PD

The quick actions of other employees saved the life of the man, who was stabbed in the chest with a large knife.

A City of Long Beach sanitation worker was arrested on Tuesday after police say he tried to murder a coworker.

According to police, Joseph Coleman, 25, of Long Beach, arrived for work at the Long Beach Sanitation Department at 7 a.m. on Dec. 10 and confronted another sanitation employee. Police say Coleman pulled out a large hunting knife and stabbed the other employee in the chest, and then fled.

Other sanitation and beach maintenance employees rushed to the man's aid and put pressure on his wound and rushed him to Mount Sinai South Nassau Long Beach Emergency Room in very serious condition. he was transferred to another hospital for treatment and is now in stable condition.

Long Beach detectives arrested Coleman later that day at 6:20 p.m. He was arraigned on Dec. 11 in Long Beach City Court and charged with second-degree attempted murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Coleman was remanded into the custody of the Nassau County Sherriff and is due back in court on Dec. 16.
