Of Lifeguards and Life

We take them for granted, yet when we are gasping for air they are there to save our lives.

On a hot summer day we think of them as part of the scene on our beach: sand, sea, sky, lifeguards.

Our Long Beach lifeguards stand ready to dive in and rescue us when we most need them: when we are gasping for air, struggling to stay alive.

As summer comes to an end, once again, I thought I’d write a bit more about our lifeguards, about their fantastic record of keeping us safe for so long.

Most of us don't know how long our Long Beach lifeguards have successfully performed their jobs, day after day, under sunny skies or whipping rain. We are just used to them being there.

But it’s foolish to take them for granted. Because they have to be in such fine shape, pass rigorous physical training and testing, and most of all keep alert to prevent drownings. And they do all that.

I wrote about these young men and women, I took photos of them, I learned about their jobs. I also took photos of families that enjoyed our beach under the eyes of our lifeguards.
