Long Beach Con Ed Engineer Honored for Substation Research

Mike Ragona wins award for his work in transmission reliability and efficiency.

A Con Edison engineer from Long Beach won a national honor for his research into energy efficiency at substations.

Mike Ragona is the winner of the Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), one of five Con Edison employees to earn this award for their research into transmission reliability and efficiency.

A section manager in Protective Systems Testing, Ragona worked on his project with experts from EPRI, a national energy research organization, and performed energy audits of substation electrical equipment. The audits found ways to improve efficiency and save energy, and will be expanded to all Con Edison substations.

“At Con Edison, we place a lot of emphasis on energy efficiency and controlling our costs,” said Ragnoa who has worked at the power company since 2003. “Cutting energy usage at substations can help us achieve both those goals.”

Con Edison is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies and provides electric, gas and steam service to 3.3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County. The company’s transmission system is an integral part of its 438 miles of overhead transmission circuits and 742 miles of underground transmission circuits.
