Marines Win in Three Straight Sets at Calhoun

LBHS boys' volleyball team faces East Meadow next.

The Long Beach boys’ volleyball team started their 2011 season on Friday with a home match againt Calhoun, beating the Colts (0-1) in straight sets: 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23.

Unforced errors hindered both team, but the Marines (1-0) made the necessary plays to come out on top and start their season off with the win.

Long Beach led the whole way through their opening set victory. They continued their momentum into the second set, eventually grabbing a five-point lead late in the frame at 19-14. Calhoun gained positive momentum as they fought back to within two points, but Long Beach took advantage of the errors to win the game by six.

In the third set, Long Beach led early by a score of 11-9. They held onto a slim two-point lead for much of the game until Calhoun found another spark to tie the score at 19-19. With service and a chance to take the lead for the first time, Dylan Darnaud, the Colts’ lead setter, sent a ball into the net, giving the Marines a 20-19 advantage.

Long Beach eventually closed the third and decisive game out by two-points after another Calhoun service error on a ball that sailed long.

Long Beach senior Adam Lazare recorded a game-high six kills, as well as two blocks. Josh Ayzenberg led the game in serving with four aces in the three sets.

“It was a good note because we won the match, but we didn’t play too well,” said Long Beach head coach Bill Gibson. “We made probably 15 errors per game. We need to work on serve-receive and serving in practice now.”

Calhoun competed at the Port Washington Tournament this past weekend as well, along with rival Kennedy, Massapequa, Roslyn, Plainview JFK and other Nassau County teams.

“We need to work on composure, concentration and our hitting," said said Corey Sweeney, Calhoun co-captain. "All of the small stuff is what really makes a difference, but we can do it though."

Long Beach will match up next on the road against East Meadow on Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. and will host Great Neck South at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 16.
