The Long Beach senior is committed to wrestle at the University of North Carolina next year, having signed his National Letter of Intent in December.
Massapequa Puts Its Own Wrestlers On The Podium
Staying on the wrestling mats, Massapequa’s Jake Nieto won the state championship at 138 lbs, while his teammates James Mulhearn and Joe Brooks finished fifth in their respective weight classes.
The individual accolades were the latest feathers in the cap of a 2025-26 wrestling squad that brought home a state championship as a team. Coach Mike McCann previously told Patch he “couldn't be prouder” of the team, noting that this class of seniors was the first class to go through all four years of high school under his tutelage.
Baldwin Goes For Hoops Title Sweep In Boys, Girls Tournaments
The dream of a dual championship is still alive for Baldwin basketball, with the boys and girls’ teams scheduled to play for Nassau County Class AAA championships Saturday night.
Boys’ basketball coach Darius Burton said the team was a little banged up heading into Saturday’s game, with second-string center Secon Mitchell nursing a back injury that kept him out of practice until Thursday and starting two-guard Jordan Williams on the mend from an ankle injury. Both would be ready to go for Saturday’s game, Burton said, against a Port Washington team that had beaten Baldwin 44-38 in their first meeting of the year. The second game, Burton noted, was a 49-32 win for Baldwin.
When asked what the keys to victory would be Saturday, Burton highlighted a couple of fundamentals that the team would need to focus on.
“Need to defend, rebound and execute,” Burton said.
Girls’ basketball coach Tom Catapano couldn’t be reached for comment for this story, but the girls’ basketball team he coaches will take on three-seed Massapequa Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The boys will take on Port Washington later in the evening, at 7:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Farmingdale State.
