'Like Godzilla Through Tokyo': West Broadway Development Faces Local Backlash At Zoning Board Meeting (patch.com) — Long Beach residents packed a zoning board meeting to challenge a proposed eight-story, 106-unit apartment complex at the former Hebrew Academy site on West Broadway, citing infrastructure, traffic, neighborhood character and boardwalk impacts. Supporters argued the project would modernize the oceanfront and revitalize a long-vacant property. The hearing was adjourned to Sept. 24, giving more Long Beach residents time to weigh in.
   

2. Long Beach police seize 23 guns, drugs in raid (liherald.com) — Long Beach police say they seized 23 illegal guns, large quantities of drugs and over $100,000 in cash during a recent raid on Rev. JJ Evans Boulevard, following a months-long investigation with federal and county partners. Officials stress that the bust, part of the city's revived narcotics task force efforts, comes just days before school starts and is meant to keep local streets and schools safer.

Long Beach Police Commissioner shares back-to-school safety tips (liherald.com) — As Long Beach students head back to class next week, Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma is urging drivers to slow down, obey school-zone rules and watch for kids near crosswalks. He also reminds students to report anything suspicious to a trusted adult so police can investigate and help keep local schools and neighborhoods safe.

Long Beach Garden Club grows community through gardening (liherald.com) — Local gardeners are turning Long Beach's library and community garden into hubs for sharing plants, tips and fresh produce for charities like the Long Beach Soup Kitchen. The Long Beach Garden Club is expanding with new evening meetings, a small grant for supplies, and popular events like Tomatomania that draw residents from nearby communities to celebrate homegrown tomatoes.
