A New Place to Play For You and Yours

The times they are a changin'. Maybe Long Beach needs to change along with them.

We Long Beach shore and boardwalk trekkers have seen the driftwood sculptures rise again and again near the sea’s edge, only to see them gone in an instant. Not by the wind and waves but by our city’s Beach Maintenance rules and wheels.

I wrote about it recently you might recall in Unbecoming Art in Long Beach.

Now I think it’s time to move to the next step: gather interested partners, friends, family, lovers of our shore—and art—to join the fun.

There were recent days in Long Beach where there were so many people on our boardwalk one might think it was May.

Many Long Islanders get cabin fever as the days are short and the sky not as blue as their families feel.

They look to their cars to take them—someplace else. Let’s let that someplace be here, in Long Beach, with a new sand art gallery right on our shore.

This all started with John Madera and his driftwood sculptures. He kept building them, the city kept talking them down. But he’s started many of us to think, maybe we all can breathe our art ideas—of which there are so many—onto our sands.

It’s obvious there is no real threat of a hazard or liability in fragile beach art; it seems it’s just caught up in the blanket of Long Beach rules.

But rules can be changed. If they are changed it could mean a refreshed Long-Beach-in-winter experience. More people will visit on climate-changed winter days. It would be good for our economy. More importantly it would be good for us.

We could demonstrate our individual art in many ways, as you’ll see in my essay, A New Place to Play For You and Yours

Be well,

Leebythesea
