Police Chief Named Interim City Manager
Michael Tangney will fill in for Jack Schnirman until a permanent replacement is found.

The City Council has named Police Commissioner Michael Tangney Interim City Manager. He will take over the role being vacated by Jack Schnirman as the city looks for a full-time replacement.
Schnirman is being sworn in as the county's new comptroller on Jan. 1, which is when Tangney will take over the position. While the city holds a nation-wide search for a replacement, Tangney will hold the position, according to the Long Beach Herald. He will also still be serving in his role as police commissioner. The Herald reported that the City Council voted to allow him to hold two roles. Tangney also said he will not be taking any increased salary or a stipend for his double-duty.
According to Newsday, Tangney is putting his all into the new job, but it's not one he wants permanently. He is not applying for the position, and plans to go back to his role as police commissioner full-time once the new city manager is found. He will, however, help the city in the search for a new manager, and will also make his first order of business hiring a new comptroller to get to work on the budget, he told Newsday.

"I’m just minding the store," Tangney said to Newsday. "We have a budget to set and a city manager and comptroller to find."
Tangney has been with the city's police department for 40 years, and has served as commissioner since 2012. His salary for 2017 was nearly $230,000, according to data from SeeThroughNY.
