Race To Honor Long Beach Resident, FDNY Hero, Who Died In 9/11

LONG BEACH, NY — A swim, paddle and run event is scheduled for this weekend as a tribute to a local FDNY firefighter who died on 9/11.

Michael Kiefer, who was assigned to Ladder 132 in New York City, was a native of Long Beach, where he was also a lifeguard.

"This event is meant to be a challenging workout to honor Michael’s dedication and perseverance," the city said on its website.

Registration for Sunday's race starts at 7:30 a.m. and it begins at 8:45 a.m. with a 150-yard run to the swim entry point at National Boulevard Beach.

Participants will swim in the ocean for 400 yards. A 1/2-mile paddle boarding is the next portion of the race, followed by a one-and-1/2 mile run.

Awards will be handed out to the top three men and women finishers, top three male and female firefighters and top three male and female lifeguards.
