The Rain on Our Rights

Are too many of us taking too much for granted? Until it's gone.

We all grew up in an America that was always, in varying degrees, divided: Taxes, spending, racial equality, income inequality, rights to health care, freedom of speech, wars, to engage or not.

But we were always confident that our democracy would stand; that was a given. We were united in that. We celebrated that over and over: on Memorial Day, on the Fourth of July—every day.

The threat to democracy was always from the outside. We lost many thousands of brave souls to engage those threats, to fight for America and democracy. And they persevered.

Now, we face a threat from inside America. Do we have the same will to overcome this threat as in the past? We need to make our voices heard. We need to recognize that the danger is real.

The fall of democracy doesn't start with a thud; it begins with baby steps.
