Fitness Tip: Dynamic stretching before physical activity is far more effective than static stretching. Dynamic stretching is moving when warming up. Static stretching is holding a stretch for a given period of time while sedentary. If your heart rate is at a resting level and you hold a static stretch, you are actually decreasing blood flow to your joints and tendons momentarily. We want to increase blood flow in our body to “warm” it up. By doing things like walking lunges, and other dynamic movements, we are both stretching and increasing our heart rate. Static stretching with a resting heart rate is like putting a rubber band in the freezer, taking it out and pulling on it immediately. http://www.seriousbeachfitness.com/
