Why, Sweetheart, it's Not What it Looks Like

Do you have trouble remembering faces, names? On our boardwalk, in your building? Me too, and we are not alone

We don't speak about it much because, well, it's embarrassing. It was for me all my life. In my social life, on my job, even in relationships. Who was that? How do I respond to that lady?

It happens to me on our boardwalk, on our beach, in supermarkets and coffee shops.

If you live in a condo building it's especially fraught with awkward moments. You see someone who seems to know you but you can't for the life of you recall who it is.

So, you play the game of nodding and smiling hoping it will come to you. Or you just fess up and say, I'm sorry? with open palms—and wait.

Often the "other" recognizes your position and rescues you gracefully and you go on with your conversation. That's cool.

But what happens when you see them again and still can't recall who they are.

Life can be a challenge in many ways but some of us have relatively unknown challenges. And we struggle with them all our lives.

I'm taking this opportunity to fess up to mine and I think there are others out there who would like to do the same.

As I write this I already have an email from a follower of my blog who gave me clear examples of how she should recognize people she sees often but fails to. She says she now realizes she is "face challenged."

Maybe you'll "see" yourselves here, if not count yourself among the blessed:
