Woman Hurt, 2 Cats Die in Long Beach Apartment Fire

LONG BEACH, NY - Firefighters battled an apartment fire in Long Beach in blizzard-like conditions around midnight on Saturday, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

The department responded to a report of a fire at an apartment on Shore Road.

Police found heavy smoke throughout the building and evacuation procedures began.

Firefighters arrived and saw visible fire coming from the back of the building on the third floor.

Crews immediately began to battle the blaze and contained the fire to one apartment without any further extension.

Firefighters continued to evacuate apartments and vent the building from heavy smoke conditions as others checked for any further pockets of fire.

One woman was treated at the scene for minor burn injuries and two cats were rescued from the apartment, but unfortunately succumbed to the smoke inhalation.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to the scene to investigate the fire.
