24 DWI Arrests, 645 Tickets Issued On Long Island Over Labor Day Weekend

LONG ISLAND, NY — New York State Police issued 645 tickets on Long Island and arrested 24 people on DWI charges during a Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement campaign, officials said.

The special enforcement period ran from Friday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 7, and included additional DWI patrols, sobriety checkpoints and enforcement targeting speeding, distracted driving and other traffic violations.

According to State Police, Long Island issued:

• 143 speeding tickets
• 34 distracted driving tickets
• 30 tickets for child restraint and seat belt violations
• Five Move Over Law tickets
• 645 total tickets, including other violations

Troopers also made 27 Penal Law arrests on Long Island during the campaign, State Police said.

Statewide, troopers issued 11,201 tickets and arrested 253 people for DWI during the four-day crackdown.

State Police also investigated 632 crashes across New York during the enforcement period, including five fatal crashes.

Of the statewide tickets issued, 3,935 were for speeding, 308 were for distracted driving, 746 were for seat belt violations and 234 were for Move Over Law violations.

The campaign was partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

This year's statewide enforcement totals were higher than during the 2025 Labor Day campaign. State Police issued 9,912 tickets and made 225 DWI arrests during last year's enforcement period, which ran from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, 2025.
