The Great Neck Library invites you and your family to celebrate the launch of our 2026 Children&rsquo;s Summer Challenge on June 26th. This year&rsquo;s theme, "Unearth a Story," takes young participants on an educational journey. Children will explore the thrilling worlds of archaeology, paleontology, and personal discovery.
The fun kicks off at 11:00 AM with an interactive children's concert by Songs for Seeds! Their high-energy performances offer effortless fun for parents and pure joy for kids. Registration is appreciated but not required. Next, at 2:00 PM join us at the Main Community Room for our Prehistoric Market Fair. Kids can explore hands-on stations packed with dinosaurs, paleontology, archaeology, and gardening. We will wrap up the celebration at 4:00 PM with our monthly Pok&eacute;mon Club, featuring tons of Ground-type fun!
Sign up for the 2026 Children&rsquo;s Summer Reading Challenge at any of our Great Neck library branches! Participants are qualified for various prizes and raffle drawings. The program spans from June 1st to September 5th. We look forward to welcoming you weekly to collect rewards and earn entries for the grand finale raffle.

Author Event with Petronely Grindea: "Unapologetically Daring to Inspire" at GN Library

We invite you to explore a collection of paintings and portraits by Rosemary Wilson Sloggatt, on display throughout June at the Great Neck Library&rsquo;s Lower-Level Art Gallery. Please join us for two special receptions at 159 Bayview Avenue: A Kids&rsquo; Reception on June 3 from 4:00&ndash;6:00 p.m., followed by an Artist Reception on June 20 from 1:00&ndash;4:00 p.m.

Artist's Statement: Among Children is a series of paintings, prints, and drawings based on observations from more than 30 years of working &ndash; and a lifetime of living &ndash; among children. As a teacher, I spend a lot of time among children, and I often find myself thinking there is so much we &lsquo;grown-ups&rsquo; can learn from them. Children go about their days, always in the moment, thinking neither ahead nor behind. So often they are experiencing things for the first time. Everything is new. With these works, I strive to capture those &lsquo;in-the-moment&rsquo; moments.

About the artist: Rosemary Sloggatt was born in Munich, Germany, in 1959, the youngest child of a military family. She grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. The city&rsquo;s thriving arts community offered stimulation as she began to draw and paint the world around her. &#8203;She studied Fine Art at Parsons School of Design and Otis Art Institute, living in both Los Angeles and New York. During her time in New York City, she worked as a page in the Art, Prints, and Photographs Division of the New York Public Research Library. Access to such material as the Gutenberg Bible, early Warhol folios, Japanese pillow books, and Audubon&rsquo;s hand-tinted Birds of America expanded her vision of the scope and meaning of art.&#8203;

Following undergraduate studies, she enrolled at Bank Street College, completing a Master&rsquo;s Degree in Museum Education. While pursuing a ten-year museum career, she married and started a family. She joined the Great Neck Public Schools in 1995 and has taught art there for more than 25 years. Rosemary has been featured in many exhibitions through the years, including the Islip Art Museum, East Islip Public Library, The Art Guild at Elderfields Preserve, Museum of Contemporary Art (Long Island), and the Islip Art Museum.
