Come share the journey of America's 250-year legacy. We’re hosting a special film screening and talk with expert historian and filmmaker Greg Blank. The lecture will highlight the representation of immigrants in early Hollywood cinema and the evolution of the portrayal of immigrant characters in more recent films and explore the ways in which immigrant stories are used to address larger social, political, and cultural issues. We’ll look at movies that detail the immigrant experience, such as The Godfather, Part II (1974); America America (1963); Avalon (1990); films from the early silent days, such as Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant (1917); to more recent films like Brooklyn (2015) and Minari (2020); as well as comical or allegorical commentary on the immigrant experience, like Coming to America (1988) and Alien Nation (1988). The presentation concludes with a discussion of the importance of accurate and nuanced representation of immigrant experiences in movies and the impact that these representations can have on shaping public perception and understanding of immigration.

Greg Blank has over 15 years of experience as a producer, director, cinematographer and editor. He has been lecturing on film and media studies and other topics since 2018. Greg is an award-winning producer for the show Push Pause Long Island on Verizon Fios1, and as a documentarian for the films Undocumented (2016), and A World Within a World: The Bay Houses of Long Island (2020). He has developed and produces over 70 lecture programs for public and private clients, including LIU Post Hutton House, Molloy College, The Huntington Cinema Arts Centre, and dozens of colleges, libraries, and venues throughout the country.

The program will take place at the Great Neck Library Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road, 2nd Level, Great Neck, on Friday, June 5, at 2:00 p.m. Registration is not required; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Long Island Music &amp; Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) will hopst its first ever Billy Joel Symposium, a two-day conference devoted to the music, lyrics, themes, and cultural impact of Billy Joel. As one of America’s most influential songwriters and performers — and Long Island’s own — Joel’s body of work offers a unique lens through which to explore popular music, regional identity, and American culture. This symposium will gather scholars, critics, musicians, and students to engage in critical analysis of Joel’s artistry, life, and legacy.
A weekend of academic dialogue, keynote conversations, and special events.&nbsp;Day 1 Highlights include Featured Keynote Speakers Jason Hanley, PhD, Vice President of Education and Visitor Engagement at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, author of Music Lab: We Rock, and recipient of the LIMEHOF Long Island Sound Award and&nbsp;Wayne Robins, LIMEHOF Inductee, Independent music journalist at Substack. Former pop music writer for Newsday(1975-1995), Village Voice, Creem, and dozens of others. Adjunct Professor at St. John’s University (2013-2024), author of several books, writer of numerous album notes including his essay for the DVD Billy Joel: The Bridge to Russia.

Come and see the exhibition of striking masterpieces of sculptures by Dr. Suzanne Posner from May 1 to July 31 at the Great Neck Library at 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck. The sculptures are located at the bookshelves in the Main Library's Reference Study Area. Be sure to join us for an art reception on June 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Main Library's Front Lobby. "Making art is joyful. An artist makes art out of the materials available. The nature of the materials influences or even elicits the creation. I enjoy seeing the materials from which the art originates; the stone, the paint, the paper, the wire. I am a direct carver, often starting a piece without knowing what the subject will be or changing the subject after starting. If a piece of stone breaks off unintentionally or a painting subject move, the artwork may need to change midway. I try to take the unexpected as an exciting challenge and continue the work with grace. I hope to bring joy to viewers with beautiful shapes and brilliant color." Dr. Suzanne Posner is an award-winning sculptor and painter. She has been sculpting in stone for 30 years and currently teaches stone sculpture at Cumberland School in Great Neck, NY. Posner’s work can be found in private art collections throughout the United States and has been seen in numerous group and solo shows. She is a member of The Art Students League of New York and The National Art League. Suzanne grew up creating clay creatures and unique jewelry and acting in school musicals. She has visited over 50 countries. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in Philosophy and from the University of North Carolina with a D.D.S. While she practiced dentistry in NYC, she studied sculpture and painting at The Art Students League and The New School. She moved back to her hometown of Great Neck and started sculpting in stone as she raised 2 creative and responsible sons with her beloved husband, Alan Katz. In 2011, Suzanne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and she retired from dentistry to sculpt and paint and teach stone carving.
