Girl Scouts of Nassau County Celebrate 2nd Annual Girls and Women in Sports Day with Adelphi University

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently held its second annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day in partnership with Adelphi University. The event gave Girl Scouts the opportunity to connect with some of Long Island’s most accomplished women’s collegiate athletes to learn from their experiences and to participate in interactive practice sessions. This year’s theme was Sportsmanship: Lead Her Forward with Kindness, Fairness and Dignity, and it emphasized the critical role of sports in empowering young women and advancing gender equality. The annual partnership and activity day is meant to honor the continued fight for equality in women’s sports while allowing Girl Scouts to learn something new and feel inspired by potential future avenues.

"National Girls and Women in Sports Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of girls in sports and underscore the importance of physical fitness in shaping the leaders of tomorrow," said Rande Bynum, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Sports play a pivotal role in instilling confidence, leadership skills and a sense of camaraderie, which are pillars of the Girl Scouts’ mission. Our girls are not just participants; they are future leaders, and sports provide them with the tools to navigate life's challenges with resilience and determination. We thank the incredible women athletes at Adelphi University, who are inspiring role models for our Girls as they become leaders of tomorrow."

The day's activities included interactive sessions with Adelphi University's renowned women's sports teams and valuable insights from the university's sport social worker. These experiences highlighted the importance of mental and emotional well-being in sports, aligning with the Girl Scouts' mission of fostering all-around development. Participating Girl Scouts were able to connect with the accomplished Adelphi student athletes and learn about sportsmanship, discipline and fairness. The common principles and skills these athletes use on a day-to-day basis are echoed in the Girl Scouts mission of strengthening teamwork, resilience and leadership.
