Hydrant Hero: Stay Safe, Clear Fire Hydrants And Win Prizes
Fire departments are urging residents to clear snow off hydrants.
LONG ISLAND, NY — As a blizzard continues to blanket Long Island, fire departments have asked residents to clear hydrants, with some even creating contests for folks.
This weekend's snowfall has left between 11 and 17 inches in Nassau County so far. After the last large snowfall earlier this month, fire departments spoke up about the community's lack of assistance in keeping people safe.
The Bethpage Fire Department Engine Company 5 shared on Facebook on Feb. 10:

"Weeks after the snowstorm, our crews are being delayed by fire hydrants buried. Again, help us help you. Dig out the fire hydrants near your home. If you have a fire, seconds count when we need water."
To entice residents to clear off the hydrants in their area, fire departments have joined in on creating a contest for their town.

The contests may vary depending on the fire department's rules, but most have similar ones posted on their Facebook pages:
- Clear a hydrant 3 feet all the way around.
- Snap a photo.
- Post the photo in the Facebook comments of the fire department's flyer.
- Like and share the post.
- Tag a friend in the comments.
The more hydrants cleared, the more entries. Residents can participate in their own town's, or as many as they'd like, for most contests. Prizes vary, but some include gift cards and certificates worth $100, such as East Meadow's. Residents can check their local fire departments' social pages to see details and if they are running the contest.
