NY Troopers Issue 11K Tickets, Probe 4 Fatal Crashes Over Holiday Weekend
State Police said 20 people were arrested on DWI charges on Long Island during the holiday enforcement campaign.
LONG ISLAND, NY — New York State Police issued 580 tickets on Long Island during its Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign, police said.
Long Island reported 20 DWI arrests, 149 speeding tickets, 23 distracted-driving tickets, 81 child restraint and seat belt tickets, and 5 Move Over Law tickets during the enforcement period, according to State Police.
Statewide, troopers issued 11,104 tickets during the campaign, which ran from May 22, through May 25, police said.

The campaign, which was partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, included sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols and enforcement targeting distracted drivers using handheld electronic devices, police said.
Troopers arrested 211 people on DWI charges statewide and investigated 693 crashes, including four fatal crashes, State Police said.

As part of the enforcement period, troopers also targeted speeding and aggressive drivers across New York. State Police said troopers issued 3,116 speeding tickets, 338 distracted-driving tickets, 1,742 tickets for seat belt violations and 249 Move Over Law tickets statewide.
Long Island had one of the lower ticket totals among State Police troops during the campaign.
The New York State Thruway had the highest total, with 1,681 tickets, followed by Eastern Hudson Valley with 1,216 tickets and the Finger Lakes area with 1,215 tickets, police said.
During last year’s Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign, State Police issued 12,062 total tickets and arrested 245 people on DWI charges.
