Severe Thunderstorms, Damaging Weather Possible On Long Island After Warm Start To The Week

Forecasts say there's a chance of severe thunderstorms Tuesday, with further thunder in the forecast later this week.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A warm start to the week could come to a thundering halt Tuesday, as forecasters say there’s a chance for severe thunderstorms in the New York metro area, including on Long Island.

The National Weather Service has warned that thunder showers could begin as early as 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the potential for these storms to continue through 10 p.m. Accuweather forecasts say temperatures will peak at 80 degrees Tuesday before thunderstorms roll in in the evening, with a low temperature of 60 degrees Tuesday night.

The primary concern with these storms, the weather service said, is potentially damaging wind gusts. Additionally, forecasters said there’s potential for heavy rainfall as the storm system moves across the region.

For Long Island, New York City and most of Westchester County, forecasters say the risk of heavy thunderstorms is marginal. Further north into the Hudson Valley, it’s one notch higher, being classified as isolated-scattered.

“Be ready to take shelter indoors when storms approach,” NWS New York said in an announcement Tuesday.
