Suffolk County Sports Weekly Round Up: Playoff Momentum, County Titles And Record-Setting Runs
Walt Whitman, John Glenn and Bay Shore athletes led a week of playoff wins, county championships and school records across Suffolk County.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY โ Student-athletes across Suffolk County closed out the week with playoff-clinching basketball wins, repeat county championships on the track, and record-setting individual performances as winter sports seasons continue to build momentum.
Walt Whitman Basketball Closes Regular Season Strong Ahead Of Playoffs
Walt Whitmanโs boys and girls varsity basketball teams wrapped up the regular season with a series of decisive wins as Suffolk County playoff brackets are set to be released Feb. 10.

The boys' varsity basketball team finished the regular season with an 80-50 victory over Riverhead, bringing its overall record to 16-4 and 12-4 in League I play. Jack Bell led the Wildcats with 25 points, while Nick DiLeo added 12 and closed out the season with 54 three-pointers โ the most in League I. All 11 players scored in the win as the team looks ahead to postseason competition.
Earlier in the week, Whitman earned a 68-47 win over Patchogue-Medford, highlighted by 27 points from Bell and 10 from Jeremy Shaikh. Senior Josh Evans contributed seven first-quarter points to help Whitman jump out to a 20-7 lead, and after the Raiders narrowed the gap in the second quarter, the Wildcats pulled away with a 22-7 fourth quarter.

The girls' varsity basketball team, the League Champion, improved to 17-1 overall following a 50-28 win over Riverhead. Jaz Julien led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Olivia Kobel knocked down two 3-pointers and added eight points. A 3-pointer from Ariana White and strong defensive play from Nevin Letren helped seal the victory as Whitman prepares for playoff matchups.
Whitman clinched its league title earlier in the week with a 63-39 win over William Floyd, remaining undefeated in league play at 14-0. Julien recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Hannah Creighton and Madi Richter each scored 18. Lili Montana and Kobel provided key minutes, while Bella Fiorelli and Paige Hiller combined for eight points, nine assists and 15 rebounds.
The Wildcats also celebrated Senior Night during a 69-37 win over Patchogue-Medford, honoring seniors Ariana White, Megan Lyte and Paige Hiller. Richter led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, while Julien nearly recorded a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists. Hiller added 11 points and seven assists.
John Glenn Relay Team Repeats As County Champions
The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School boys winter track 4x200-meter relay team captured its second consecutive Suffolk County Small Schools championship on Feb. 1. The relay squad of Alex Brink, James DโAngeli, Kacper Jasinski and Shane Keeven successfully defended last yearโs title despite challenging winter training conditions.
Individually, Brink finished second in the 300-meter race and sixth in the 55-meter, while DโAngeli placed sixth in the 600-meter event. Coaches and school officials praised the teamโs leadership, academic strength and perseverance throughout the season.
Bay Shore Runner Sets School Record, BOE Honors Fall Athletes
Bay Shore student-athletes were recognized this week for standout individual and team accomplishments across track and fall sports programs.
Bay Shore girls varsity track runner Maggie McCormick competed at the prestigious Millrose Games, placing fifth in the High School Girls Invitational Mile with a time of 4:42, setting a new school record. Bay Shore alum Luciano Fiore also competed at the meet, finishing fourth in the Menโs 600-meter race.
Board Of Education Recognizes Fall Athletes
The Bay Shore Board of Education recently honored several varsity athletes for their fall-season accomplishments and postseason recognition, including Haven Mills and Kelsie Kennedy from girls volleyball, Hichem Abbad and Ager Agirregomezkorta from boys soccer, and James Huber, Niall Haughney, and Zareb Gonzalez from boys volleyball.
