Lower East Side Tenement Museum: The Tenement Museum Cookbook

In 1993, the Tenement Museum reached out to the descendants of families that had lived in 97 Orchard and requested their family recipes for reproduction in a Tenement Museum Cookbook.

Although the cookbook never came to be, these recipes are still preserved in the Museum’s archive and show how Jewish immigrant families maintained food traditions from their homelands while adapting to their new lives on the Lower East Side. Check out some of these delicious recipes, perfect for the Jewish holidays, and think about how your family recipes have stood the test of time.
