81-Year-Old Driver Crashes Car in W. Hempstead, 87-Year-Old Passenger From Malverne Killed

Driver seriously injured in crash that kills passenger Friday evening, police say.

A crash in West Hempstead on Friday evening killed a 87-year-old Malverne man, police said.

According to detectives, an 81-year-old woman was driving a 2003 Acura onto Eagle Avenue as she exited the CVS, located at 814 Hempstead Avenue at about 5:15 p.m.

While heading west on Eagle Avenue, the woman lost control of the car causing it to mount the curb and travel back into the CVS parking lot, where it struck two parked cars, police said.

The Acura then continued to travel out of control across Hempstead Avenue, where it came to rest after striking a tree, police said.

The passenger in car, Henry Gugumuck, of Malverne, was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The driver was admitted to another local hospital in serious condition with head and neck injuries, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks. There is no criminality suspected in the crash at this time, police said.
