Census: Malverne Population Drops, Diversity Grows

The results of the 2010 U.S. Census reveal changes in the make-up of Malverne.

Over the past decade, Malverne has seen a drop in its population but an increase in its diversity.

The latest survey taken by the United States Census Bureau, shows a 4.7 percent drop in the village's population, or 420 people, compared to figures obtained from the 2000 Census.

Malverne's population now stands at 8,514 compared to 8,934 in 2000.

The population of the United States grew from 281.4 million in 2000 to 308.7 million in 2010, an increase of 9.7 percent. New York State's population rose just 2 percent to 19.3 million.

Although there are less people living in the village than there were 10 years ago, those who have moved into the community have made it more diverse.

The number of Black or African American residents has almost doubled and the Asian population has grown by 28 percent in the last decade. The village's small American Indian/Alaskan Native community has shrunk even more, now down to just four people, from 14, but we have added one person of the Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander race. In 2000, there was no one of this ethnic group living in Malverne. An additional 200 Hispanic or Latino people now call the village home too, a 37 percent increase since 2000.
