The Incorporated Village of East Rockaway joined in the national celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 27 by celebrating its commitment to trees and the continued beautification of the community.

A new tree was planted at the Rocklyn Avenue Parking Field to celebrate this national day of environmental celebration, and to also further Mayor Fran Lenahan’s commitment to cleaning up the community.

“Arbor Day promotes how trees in East Rockaway help clean the air, conserve soil and water while also reduce heating and cooling costs by moderating temperatures,” Lenahan said. “I’m proud that East Rockaway is again celebrating Arbor Day.  It’s another opportunity to show our community values trees not only for their beauty but for their numerous health and environmental benefits as well.”

Rose Trum, Chair of the Village Beautification Committee, arranged for the planting of a mature purple leaf plum tree at the Rocklyn Avenue Parking Field as well as the frequent weeding, fertilization and mulching of this area.

“The East Rockaway Beautification Committee worked with Mayor Lenahan and the village board to plant a tree on this national day of celebration not only for the benefit of our neighbors of this generation but as our gift to posterity,” said Trum.

East Rockaway also has the honor of being named as “Tree City USA” by the prestigious National Arbor Day Foundation for the past fourteenth years. This designation was received due to the village’s attention to trees, its tree care ordinance and community forestry program as well as the official village Arbor Day celebration.

Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April and was founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872 to encourage tree planting and care throughout the nation’s different communities.
