Essay Writing Contest- Grades 6-8 West Hempstead Only

Cash prize for essay winners

The West Hempstead Public Library, North Shore branch of the American Association of University Women, and Central Nassau County Rotary Club are sponsoring a Middle School Writing Contest for students in grades 6-8 that live or attend school in West Hempstead. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to explore the following topic: “If YOU had a superpower, and could use it only once, how would you use it to improve the world?”

Choose one issue facing us today and write an essay or poem in which you define it, tell why it is important, and tell how you would use your superpower to improve the world.

Entries must be submitted to the library by March 16th, 2018 and must follow these guidelines:

  • Entries must be no longer than 400 typed words
  • Pages must be numbered, with the student’s name at the top of each page
  • Entries must be the original work of the student
  • The entry form must be stapled to the front of the essay or poem.

Cash prizes will be awarded as follows: First Place: $200 – Second Place: $150 – Third Place: $100
