Fire Guts LI Home, Displacing Family Of 8

The house was a "total loss," but the family managed to escape uninjured. A friend has started a fundraiser to help them.

An early morning fire on Monday has displaced a family of 8 from Franklin Square right before Christmas.

According to Nassau County police, the fire started just before 6:30 a.m. at the home on Farnum Boulevard. When the officers arrived, the entire two-family home was engulfed in flames.

Everyone in the Havrylkoff family, who was in the home at the time, managed to escape.

The Franklin Square Fire Department was in charge of the scene, and was assisted by firefighters from Elmont, Floral Park, Garden City, Garden City Park, Hempstead, Lynbrook, Malverne, New Hyde Park, West Hempstead and Uniondale.

There were no serious injuries. One firefighter suffered back pain. Two civilians, one suffering from asthma and the other from a panic attack, refused medical attention at the scene.

The family told CBS2 news that all they had left were the clothes on their backs. Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department Chief John Salzman described the house as a "total loss."
