Lynbrook FD Teaches Students About Emergency Safety
Lynbrook Volunteer Fire Department and West End School students learn about fire and emergency safety for National Fire Prevention Week.

Submitted by Lynbrook School District
Students at Lynbrook’s West End School received an informative visit from emergency responders in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, observed from Oct. 5-11.
Volunteers from the Lynbrook Fire Department’s Vulcan Chemical & Hose Company and North Shore LIJ Health System taught the children all about staying safe during crises. The presenters arrived at the school in an ambulance and fire truck, both of which students had the opportunity to tour.

EMT Ray Smith described his role in helping people who are in urgent need of medical care and demonstrated various pieces of equipment that can prevent health risks or injuries during transportation to the hospital. He explained that EMTs must be very careful when moving individuals who are ill or have been in an accident and showed how they may be braced or placed on a stretcher before being carried into the ambulance.
Firefighters Daniel Ambrosio (captain), Karl Feltkamp and Peter Festa (former captain) focused on fire safety and reviewed the “stop, drop and roll” technique. They discussed their roles as responders and showed students their uniforms, explaining that the heavy jackets, masks and air tanks might look intimidating, but they are there to help keep people safe and should never be feared.

As a special highlight, the students each had a chance to spray the fire hose and understand how fires are extinguished.
All of the guests emphasized the importance of calling 911 during times of emergency. They informed students that once that number is dialed and an address is provided, emergency vehicles and crews are dispatched as quickly as possible.
After completing their training in safety, the students received fire helmets and stickers from the generous visitors and thanked them for providing such valuable lessons.
