Man Stopped Without Headlight; Handgun, Ammunition In Car: Police

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — A man was stopped with no headlights just after midnight on Sunday in West Hempstead. During the investigation, officers observed a knife in the center cup holder, detectives said.

Once the man was removed from the 2007 Toyota Camry, police discovered a 9mm handgun with no serial number in the back of the car, and a zip lock bag containing 30 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, detectives said.

Iyel Adams Banton, 19, of Central Islip was arrested without further incident, police said.

Banton, who was due to be arraigned on Sunday in Hempstead, faces charges that include, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.
