Photo of the Week: Irene Takes Out Malverne

The wrath of Tropical Storm Irene could be seen around the neighborhood this week in the remains of downed trees, fallen power lines, damaged homes and vehicles.

Irene's powerful winds also took out an iconic symbol that usually greets residents and visitors upon entering Malverne from West Hempstead or from Exit 17 of the Southern State Parkway. This sign, which had stood at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Hempstead Avenue in front of , was ripped from its post and found shattered on the ground Friday afternoon.
