Police: Drunk Man Arrested After West Hempstead Crash With 2-Year-Old Son in Car
The 36-year-old was arrested Sunday night after minor accident, police say.

A Garden City man was arrested after a car accident in West Hempstead Sunday night for DWI with his 2-year-old son in his car, police said.
According to police, officers on patrol came upon two vehicles pulled over on the shoulder following a minor crash at Hempstead Turnpike and Front Street around 10:25 p.m. Alonso Mendez, 36, the driver of a 2003 Honda Civic involved in the accident, had bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, police said.
Mendez’s was traveling with his wife in the front passenger seat and his 2-year-old son restrained in an infant carseat in the rear of the car, police said.

Mendez was arrested and the child was released to his mother at the scene.
No injuries were reported in the crash.

Mendez is charged with aggravated DWI–a felony under Leandra’s Law–endangering the welfare of a child and DWI. He will be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
