Long Island Day Care Owner Physically Abused 6-Year-Old Girl: Police

The abuse occurred when the child refused to put on her seatbelt on a school bus, police say.

The owner of a Long Island day care center was arrested Friday after police say she “physically abused” a 6-year-old girl who refused to put her seatbelt on.

Carolyn Reid, 73, is charged wth endangering the welfare of a child following the incident that police say took place at 8 a.m. Friday in Roosevelt.

According to police, a 6-year-old girl was at His Word Day Care located at 33 Maple Drive and being placed on a school bus operated by Huntington Coach when she refused to put on a seatbelt.

The bus driver enlisted the assistance of Reid, who owns the day care center and lives at the same address, police said. Reid then physically abused the girl, police said.

The child was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation, but no injuries were reported, police said.

Reid was issued an appearance ticket and scheduled to appear on Monday, Jan. 25 at First District Court in Hempstead.
