Zoning Board Scrutinizes West Hempstead Apartment Project

Hempstead Town board reviews plan for proposed apartment complex on Hempstead Gardens Drive.

at the old AVF Carting parcel on Hempstead Gardens Drive in West Hempstead was subject to questioning and criticism from local officials and residents Tuesday.

Barry Leon, the developer of the two-acre property, presented his plan to the Town of Hempstead Zoning Board of Appeals on Nov. 15 seeking to rezone the land from an industrial classification to an URD-C, a multi-family urban renewal development.

Among the concerns aired at the meeting, according to Newsday, was the building's appearance, noise from the nearby Long Island Rail Road and its impact on traffic.

"All I can say is that it resembles an old-fashioned motel," Rosalie Norton, president of the West Hempstead Community Support and Civic Association, stated.

The board did not make a decision on the plan but instead gave the developer the option to amend the application. For more details about the plan and stay tuned for updates.
