Valley Stream 24 School District Attends Howard University Hiring Fair
Superintendent Unal Karakas conveys district's commitment to expanding recruitment efforts
Superintendent Unal Karakas of Valley Stream 24 School District recently conveyed the district’s commitment to expanding its recruitment efforts to a diverse pool of candidates at a recruitment fair held at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Joining Superintendent Karakas was Dr. Scott Comis, Principal of Brooklyn Avenue School. Notably, Valley Stream 24 School District was the only district from the tristate area to engage candidates face-to-face at this historically Black University’s recruitment fair.
Reflecting on the experience, Superintendent Unal Karakas remarked, “Meeting candidates from across the nation, as well as local individuals from the tristate area, and those intending to return post-graduation, was truly remarkable. Engaging with students from various backgrounds allowed us to share our district's core values and aspirations. While some may view our presence at the fair as an opportunity for candidates, we see it as an opportunity for our district to broaden our candidate pool and enhance our service to students. We are dedicated to continuously ensuring high-quality educators for our students and recognize the importance of seeking diverse talent nationwide.”
The district's participation in the recruitment fair is aligned with its mission to enrich the diversity of its candidate talent pool, particularly in recruitment efforts. Valley Stream 24 School District already collaborates with local colleges and universities, utilizing platforms like Handshake to advertise job opportunities. By attending Howard University’s recruitment fair, Superintendent Karakas and Principal Comis sought to increase their engagement with candidates and foster a dialogue that goes beyond a traditional job posting.

They were also excited about our future-focused vision for the district.”
Mr. Karakas intends to further partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities, alongside other local colleges and universities, and participate in career fairs to expand the district’s outreach.
