VIDEO: Hempstead Town Dems Hold Jobs Rally

Democratic candidate for Hempstead Town supervisor Gary Port promised supporters he would bring jobs back to the county at a political rally in Baldwin Wednesday.

The event, co-hosted by the Hempstead Town Democratic Committee, was held on a Merrick Road business district that has been plagued by a weak economy. Port blamed some of the region's economic problems on Kate Murray, and promised supporters he would bring jobs back to the county.

"Let's take a moment to look in wonder and awe at the unique suburban characters she has given us," Port said. "And what does she want to do to fix that problem? Open another shopping mall."

Port also promised cuts to salaries of the supervisor and his staff, if elected.

"I would cut my own salary by 25 percent and reduce that of other senior officials in my administration by 10 percent," he said.

An official from the Hempstead Town public information office, touted the public officials as being hard working and that they garner impressive results with their efforts.

"Our township is freezing all town taxes for 2012, we’ve earned the highest Wall Street credit ratings available, our officials have reduced debt service for three straight years and Supervisor Murray and the Town Board have brought about significant economy-boosting development. Our town officials get positive results at a time when other governments at all levels are mired in fiscal chaos."

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
