Village of Hempstead Fishing Trip Essay Contest
Local students write essays for the chance to go fishing with Mayor Hall
Village of Hempstead, New York (June 12, 2015) – As part of the Mayor’s My Brother’s Keeper Adelphi STEP (Science Technology Entry Program), Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. is inviting 40 boys who have shown great academic improvement to go fishing with him in Port Jefferson, N.Y. Boys from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades are encouraged to enter a 250 word essay about why they would like to go fishing for a chance to win.
“This contest is a reward for our Hempstead boys’ hard work,” explained Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. “We’re very pleased with how successful this program has been in helping students improve academically. Education is key to a successful future and we’re proud to support these boys in their success.”
The Mayor’s My Brother’s Keeper Adelphi STEP program aims to empower young African American and Hispanic boys to strengthen their STEM skills, leadership qualities and community involvement. Essays should be submitted to Juanita Hargwood at 99 Nichols Ct. Hempstead NY 11550 no later than Jun 19th, 2015. The fishing trip is free for the 40 winners of the essay contest, but students should bring their own lunches. The group of selected students will leave the Mayor’s office with Mayor Hall, Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa and Trustee Waylyn Hobbs Jr. at 5:30 a.m. on July 18th and return around 1:00 p.m.

“We’re very excited about where the Mayor’s My Brother’s Keeper Adelphi STEP program is going,” added Village of Hempstead Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa. “The boys deserve this fishing trip, as well as the access to opportunity participants receive.”
