WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — Residents from West Hempstead were the only school district in Nassau County to vote down the new school budget.

The vote lost by just 141 votes, as 1,310 voted against the 2023-2024 budget of $74,125,176.

The tax levy would have been a 1.9% increase.

"The Board of Education will hold meetings in the coming days to discuss its options," the district said on its website.

The only other Long Island school budget to fail was Wainscott, according to Newsday.
