A Time For Family Fun

Central Library held "A Time For Kids" Wednesday night.

Wednesday night was a great time to be a kid if you were at Family Fun Night at Central Library.

The program, called "A Time for Kids" , was a big hit with kids and parents.  The program stresses repetitiveness for child development. It uses music, movement, stories and crafts to entertain preschoolers.

"I think if a child comes to the program on a second occasion, or a third or fourth or tenth, it's familiar to them so they get a little bit of mastery of the subject and they're ready and feeling comfortable," said Karen Hauptman, who runs the program. " For those who are new to it, it's repetitive, so it starts to feel comfortable right away."

The activities began with everyone singing "The Hello Song" and then it was time for arts and crafts, with the children each making their own skyscraper.  Next, children played a matching game called "Lacing and Learning," and then it was storytime on Old MacDonald's farm.  After storytime, all the children got up to play a game of catch with the adult they came with.

Margaret Divine brought her son and said that he enjoys the program.

"He likes it because he can be with kids his own age and it has a lot of different subjects, like the art and crafts and the music," said Devine.

The children were growing more excited with each new game they played. Lynn Georgiou has been bringing her son to Family Fun Night for over two years.

"He started when he was 18 months old, he's four now, and we've been doing it once a month and we try and come whenever we can," said Georgiou. "He loves it, I definitely recommend it."

The children were even thrilled to clean up after each activity.

"We give them a little sense of ownership," said Hauptman. "The kids have to return all the materials, and they really feel good about it, they all smile when they do it."

The next Family Fun Night is Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.  Adults can register for children ages 18 months to five years (not in kindergarten).
