Police say the baby was delivered early Sunday.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A pregnant woman gave birth to a newborn baby in the back of an SUV on the Long Island Expressway.

When a highway supervisor pulled over a speeding 2019 Nissan Pathfinder around 12:20 a.m. Sunday, the officer discovered the driver had been rushing his wife to a hospital. But the woman delivered her baby in the backseat before they could reach their destination.

The officer called for an ambulance and additional units for assistance, and ambulance workers helped support the mother and child with medical assessments.
