Berner Middle School Inducts 276 to Junior National Honor Society

The gymnasium at Alfred G. Berner Middle School was packed to capacity with parents, teachers and students last week  to induct the 2012 members of the National Junior Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

The standing room only crowd honored 276 eighth grade students who earned outstanding academic and community service achievement.  

This year's class marks the largest class in Berner history, with almost half of the 600 eighth grade students being honored in the 23^rd ceremony.

“I think it gets bigger every year because the kids do so well,” said Middle School Principal Jason Esposito. “We had 276 students this year and that’s pretty impressive. That’s a big percentage of our kids here and it takes a lot of effort. It’s almost like you can’t have a bad
quarter.”

Students are chosen for the Junior National Honor Society basedon maintaining a 90 percent grade point average, service in the community, leadership, character and citizenship. 

“We review every student individually to make sure that not only is their [grade point] average is right or their extracurricular activity is there,” Esposito
said. “But to also to ensure that they are truly deserving because it is a great achievement of recognition. It is no small feat.”

Esposito told the hundreds of parents and students that JNHS was designed to create enthusiasm for scholarship and develop a positive sense of character, leadership and community in the students.  “We are showing the community that this is what school is all about.”
