Both Laughter

The subject of diamond solitaires came up often during the half a century my love and I shared,

The first time was the weekend when I made my choice between the traditional symbol of love, a diamond engagement ring, or the commitment to love forever, a wedding band,

I decided immediately. Of course I chose the simple band that I have worn now for more than seven decades, two of them alone.

It was a decision never regretted. Many times after I made that choice, my beloved wanted to buy a diamond to accompany the simple band that still remains on my third finger left hand,

I always declined, and again it was a decision I have never regretted.

Admittedly, I will always treasure the many David Yurman gifts I received instead of the traditional diamond.

However, I still believe as young lovers we chose the time to be together although it represented a rejection of the accepted rules of social behavior.

As I recall some of the perimeters of engagement my friends enjoyed, included not only the traditional solitaire but also, a crammed hope chest replete with linen. We had neither although I must admit beginning married life in a different state sans a towel was quite a challenge.

However, challenges not only make you stronger, they often provoke laughter which is accompanied by love.

And the diverse memories that are still so vivid, resurrect both the laughter and the love.
